Group B Streptococcus is a bacteria that 20% of women have in their vagina. It does not affect you at all, but the baby can pick up an infection when he or she comes through the vagina and it can cause a serious infection in the baby. How do you test for Group B Strep? We use a simple culture from your vagina and labia between 34 and 36 weeks. It is sent to the lab and takes 3-4 days for a result. What happens if I have Group B Strep? You will receive antibiotics when you are in labor to prevent your baby from getting the bacteria. Please come to the hospital early enough in labor so we can administer the antibiotics several hours before your delivery. What if I have Group B Strep and my water breaks? You
should go to the hospital as soon as possible, even if you are still in
early labor. We will give you antibiotics to prevent an infection in your
baby. |
