NuvaRing is a new form of birth control. It is a small plastic ring that you put in your vagina. You leave it in for three weeks. The fourth week you take it out, and that’s when you get your period. You insert a new ring one week after taking the old ring out. You must us a back up form of birth control for the first seven days after you start NuvaRing. The ring has similar hormones to the pill, but it is released slowly by your body heat. Your vaginal muscles hold the ring in place, so it shouldn’t fall out. You will not feel the ring once it is inserted. During testing, most men said they couldn’t feel the ring during intercourse, and those that couldn’t didn’t mind. To insert the ring you simply squeeze it and put it in your vagina like a tampon. To remove it you fish it out with your finger. It cannot get lost in your vagina and it cannot move up too far. Side effects are uncommon with the ring. It uses lower dose of hormones than the pill or patch because it sits right next to your ovaries and uterus. Common side effects are spotting, headache, and breast tenderness. These usually go away after the first month. To start using the ring you insert it during the first seven days after your period starts. If you are switching from birth control pills, you can start it during the last week of your pills. If you are switching from Depo Provera, you can start it when you are due for your shot. If you are switching from an IUD, you should start it the same day your IUD is removed. If the ring does fall out, simply rinse it off and reinsert it within three hours. If it has been out for more than three hours, rinse it off and reinsert it, but use a back-up form of birth control for the next seven days. NuvaRing does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. For more information see www.nuvaring.com. |
